At Stockton Riverside College we practise what we preach employing apprentices in a wide variety of roles across the College.

We know that apprenticeships are a great way of creating a workforce with the specific skills needed for your business.

This National Apprenticeship Week we have been meeting some of our current and past apprentices.

Today we catch up with Jamie Gilbey and Hannah Catchpole. Both started their careers as apprentices at Stockton Riverside College and now they have permanent jobs at the College.

Jamie's route to success

Jamie GilbeyWhen Jamie secured an apprenticeship at Stockton Riverside College he never dreamt it would lead to a permanent job. But six years on his career at the College is still going strong, in fact, the 26-year-old is now working with other apprentices as a trainee assessor himself.

Starting as an apprentice at 21, he said: “It was the idea of being able to get experience while being paid at the same time that appealed. I didn’t expect it to lead to a permanent job.”

Being offered a position as an administrator came as a huge boost for Jamie who is now working as an admissions officer at the College. He said: “I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone because it worked for me.”

Hannah's celebrating job success

Hannah CatchpoleA career in HR is the plan for former Business Administration Apprentice Hannah. The 18-year-old from Middlesbrough secured a position in Stockton Riverside College’s personnel department after impressing with her hard work and determination.

“I chose an apprenticeship straight from school, because I wanted to earn while you learn,” she said. Initially working on the College’s service desk Hannah admits she hadn’t considered a job in HR until she saw the role advertised.

Overwhelmed to get the job she said: “Doing an apprenticeship gave me so much experience, I made new friends and it gave me the opportunity to get this job.”

Would she recommend an apprenticeship to others? “Definitely. It gives you that first foot in the door.”
