Teesside united front (3)A Christmas hit could be on the cards for Teesside following the release of a unique charity single.

Musicians and performers from across the area have come together to perform on the charity remake of Young Rebel Set’s One Law.

Aptly renamed One Love the single was recorded and produced by SRC Bede Sixth Form’s own Callum Rattray and Patrick Jordan. All proceeds from the single will go to Teesside charity the Finlay Cooper Fund.

“It has been good fun,” said sound technician Callum (pictured below right), who only completed the BTEC Music Technology course alongside A levels at the College this summer.

He added: “It was really good to get the chance to work with all of these different artists and then bring their performances together.”

Matthew Chipchase, lead singer of Teesside indie rock band, Young Rebel Set, was joined by Mark Evans, Andy Parmley and Jimmy Beck, in rewriting the lyrics of one of the band’s existing songs to create the Teesside Christmas anthem.

DSC03098Matthew leads on the vocals along with performances from local singers Samantha Durnan, Kim Blair, Sean Crichton of Abel Raise the Cain, Josh Mannion, Dan and Michael Spooner of Weird Shapes, Paul Sudlow of the Funk Collective, Naomi Lowe of the Southmartins and male vocal choir Infant Hercules.

Featured musicians include Wildcats of Kilkenny frontman Mike McGrother on fiddle plus Young Rebel Set members Andy and Chris Parmley, Mark and Luke Evans, with SRC Bede’s Patrick Jordan, a former member of Young Rebel Set himself, playing several instruments including piano.

“It took some organising but fortunately everyone was so supportive and just said ‘Tell me where and when’ when we asked them to get involved,” said Patrick.

The song, which had its first public airing on the Riverside Stadium PA system at half-time on Saturday, is now available to download from Bandcamp and will be available via Amazon on CD by the end of the week. An accompanying music video is also being put together by Media and Film Studies staff and students from Billingham’s SRC Bede Sixth Form.

John Christie, owner of Stockton micro pub The Golden Smog was the brains behind the Teesside single, which quickly garnered support including James Beck owner of Stockton’s Ku-Bar and The Storytellers.

John said: “The logistics of such an ambitious project proved impossible to overcome but Paddy and Jimmy did a fantastic job pulling together all the local singers and musicians, who were all keen to give up their time to help local kids. The final result is brilliant.”

DSC03100The Finlay Cooper Fund was launched by former Middlesbrough footballer Colin Cooper and his wife Julie in their son’s name after the youngster lost his life in a tragic choking accident shortly before his second birthday. The charity, which is entering its 10th year, raises money for a wide variety of children’s causes.

Of the Teesside single Colin said: “I think that the idea is brilliant and as soon as I heard it I said to my wife and the other charity trustees it reminded me of Band Aid crossed with Fairytale of New York.

“On behalf of the fund and the family we are honoured and privileged that they chose us as the charity to support. Our thanks go to everyone involved.”

‘One Love’ by Teesside United can be downloaded for just £1 from http://teessideunited.bandcamp.com/ now, Amazon from the start of next week and www.finlaycooperfund.co.uk.

The CD, priced £4, is available from The Golden Smog, The Storytellers and from the Wildcats of Kilkenny’s Christmas gigs.
