Childcare and Health and Social Care students have been getting hands-on with medical equipment after Medical Mavericks visited the college with their Careers in Health workshop.

Medical Mavericks deliver a variety of workshops all over the country that are designed to inspire young people to work in STEM.

With the aim to debunk the myth that only doctor and nurse roles are available in the health industry, the interactive session demonstrated the diverse range of careers available in the sector.

Toby and Stefan, from Medical Mavericks brought along a huge range of kit for the students to try their hands at including an infra-red scanner used by phlebotomists, a key-hole surgery simulator used by surgeons, an ear camera frequently used by GPs and a HazMat suit used in occupational health.

Childcare lecturer, Jackie Robbins said: “It’s been great having Medical Mavericks come into the college and bring in their amazing kit. Letting them have a go and use the equipment is great as it gives them an idea of what they could be doing in a few years time.”

“It’s really shown the students, especially the childcare students, that there are so many careers available to them, it’s really opened their eyes.”
