Keelan describes how before coming to SRC Bede Sixth Form he was a really shy person, but during his studies here he gained heaps of confidence and learned how to open up to people.

When asked if he’d do anything differently if he could do it all again, the only suggestion he had was that he’d try to “settle in and open up a bit quicker”, as his time at Bede flew by.

Now that he’s at Teesside University studying English Studies, he’s putting the confidence he gained to good use. “It’s been a steep learning curve, but it’s been the best year yet”, he said, talking about how he’s enjoying learning and living independently.

Keelan is greatly enjoying his course so far, explaining how it’s a mixture of English literature and language, with other modules looking at things like cultures and ethics built in too. He’s also had a go at some creative writing, which is something he’d never considered before. “I’ve always been academic and preferred that style, so this has opened my eyes to creative writing. I particularly enjoyed the poetry.”

Keelan still plans to go on to qualify as a teacher – “I can’t imagine doing anything else!” Whilst he has always pictured himself as a teacher from a young age, Keelan particularly took inspiration from some of his favourite teachers at Bede; Abbie Colledge, Psychology; and Martin Hill, English Language. He said they were incredibly supportive and always available to help or for a chat, particularly during his second year when the work got that bit tougher.

For anyone considering choosing Bede for their next step in education, Keelan’s advice is to make good use of the open days and taster days, and chat to current students and teachers as much as possible. “It’s a fun and educational environment with a nice atmosphere. I used to spend a lot of time here outside of class as it’s a great place to come and study. Bede has had a lasting positive impact on me.”

We wish Keelan every success as he continues with his studies, and hope to see him teaching soon!
