Valuable lessons in logistics are paying off for these students from Stockton Riverside College, SRC Bede Sixth Form and NETA Training.

This summer they will complete their courses with a much greater understanding of the working world ahead of them.

The learners are among the latest group of students to have successfully completed the College’s Career Ready Logistics Academy programme.

Offering a fascinating insight into this often overlooked sector, for at least one student it has already resulted in a job offer.

NETA Training student Michael has started work as an apprentice in supply chain and warehousing after being snapped up by PD Ports.

“I didn’t expect anything like this,” said the 19-year-old from Yarm, who chose to study Engineering at NETA after previously struggling to find an apprenticeship.

Signing up to the Logistics Academy alongside his full-time course at NETA, he said: “I thought it seemed like a good opportunity.”

By taking part in a series of master classes, site visits, working with a mentor and work experience, the Logistics Academy builds on the students’ employment-based skills, working closely with industry employers and experts.

It was after impressing bosses during his internship with PD Ports that Michael was offered an apprenticeship.

“Everyone was really nice and I felt like I fit in straight away,” he said. “I had no idea I would be offered an apprenticeship.”

Today he said: “It is brilliant, I love it. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.”

Being in the work environment, he said: “It has made me grow up.” And he has his sights set on a bright future.

He said: “I want to progress in the company, working through the job roles and aiming higher. Hopefully I could go on to be a supervisor and then warehouse or store manager. There are so many different directions that it could lead.”

Celebrating at a special Logistics Academy awards ceremony at the College, Michael is among six students to successfully complete the programme this summer.

He said: “I got so much experience, I couldn’t have asked for more. It opened my eyes to what work is really like. For anyone who doesn’t know what they want to do I would definitely recommend it. It gets you out there and puts your name forward.

As for careers in logistics, he said: “Definitely look into it, it might not be for everyone but I have found it is a very good area to be in.”
