Our sports students were given an exciting insight into working for a top football club when Tottenham Hotspur first team Performance Analyst Joe came in to chat with them.

He kicked off his presentation by explaining how, like our students, he studied the Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science course at SRC Bede Sixth Form. He then continued his studies with a degree in Sports Coaching at Northumbria University, and whilst there gained work experience with Newcastle United Football Club. Seeing the behind-the-scene workings at the club helped Joe to decide on his future career, and he specialised his sporting knowledge with an MA in Performance Analysis at the University of Chichester.

Offering words of wisdom to our students, Joe said: “Work experience is key. Football is a difficult career to get into, you need to have a real love for it and be willing to work for free at the beginning. That helps to get your foot in the door.”

This outlook has paid off for Joe, as he scored a full-time role whilst interning at Tottenham Hotspur. He now lives and breathes football, all day, every day. From capturing players training on the pitch with drone cameras, pre-match analysis, coding live games and delivering post-match analysis back to the team, performance analysts are the brains behind the game.

Curious SRC Bede students asked what it was like to work alongside elite football players, and Joe explained he has a “good relationship” with them, often seeing them around the office, training, and travelling to matches, which helps to build a professional relationship. Joe said: “It doesn’t feel like work when you love what you do.”
