Four classmates from SRC Bede Sixth Form went head to head with some of the subject’s young highflyers in the British Biology Olympiad.
“This is an international competition which tests students Biology understanding and application of their knowledge,” said SRC Bede’s Teacher of Biology, Gemma Bate.
The competitors are required to complete two online papers taken under supervised exam conditions.
Open to students from around the world, the Olympiad offers opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
It also encourages those with a keen interest in the subject to expand and extend their knowledge, in the hope they will be inspired to continue their studies beyond A level.
All four SRC Bede students were recognised for their abilities with Sharon Saji and Eleanor Mackey both being commended, Alice Stokes was highly commended, while Lewis Mitchell received a bronze award.
Lewis, 17, who previously studied at All Saints Academy, said: “The test was really hard and introduced some new subjects that go beyond A level, so I was really pleased when the results came out.”
Gemma added: “These students are all hard working and as their teacher I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.”
The British Biology Olympiad is used as the first stage in selecting a team to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad.
