Offering a range of introductory level courses, The Skills Academy is the ideal choice if you prefer to learn in a smaller environment. It provides another option for those aged 14 to 18 years old who may be looking for a different kind of learning experience.

With a focus on practical learning, lessons are delivered in a calm and friendly environment, helping you to build the skills and the confidence you need to succeed.

Vocational

Come and join a small and friendly college in Billingham, offering courses up to Level 1 in a range of different subjects.

Caring for Children Level 1 

We believe there’s nothing more important than taking responsibility for a child’s well-being. Whether working as a teacher, Early Years Practitioner or in the care industry it’s vital you can offer a service that’s caring, supportive, fun and stimulating. Our courses will show you how to develop all of these skills and apply them at work.

Attendance: Full time

What will you do?

You’ll develop the skills needed to work with babies and young children through a combination of theory and practical sessions. Covering subjects including development, safeguarding, health and safety, and organising activities. You’ll learn how children develop and pick up effective techniques for interacting with youngsters.

How will you learn?

The qualification is delivered through a range of both taught and practical sessions, enabling learners to obtain the skills required to work with young children.

How are you assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include a portfolio of evidence, written assignments, posters, presentations and professional discussions.

You need:

A minimum of three GCSEs grade 3/E or above, including English language and maths.

What do you need to know?

Alongside this qualification learners will attend functional skills or GCSE Maths and English to support their further development in these areas.

What’s next?

You could progress onto a relevant Level 2 qualification such as, CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care.

Construction Skills Level 1

This Construction Skills Level 1 Certificate gives students the chance to try a variety of construction trades and see which trades they enjoy and what trade they want to pursue as a career. Students will complete 6 units covering a range of construction tasks in both theory and practical aspects.

This is a practical based course with an element of theory based taught sessions.

Attendance: Full time

How will you learn?

The course consists of both practical and theory sessions.
Students will engage in a wide range of activities including the use of technology, construction materials and tools.

Students are assessed on both practical and theory activities, including module based assignments.

You need:

An interested in learning a variety of construction skills.

What do you need to know?

Students will be interviewed prior to starting the Construction Skills course.

What’s next?

Progression onto a specific trade Diploma or an Apprenticeship.

Exploring Creative Arts and Media Level 1

Are you interested in a career in art and design? If you are creative, love drawing and you have a passion for art, then we can offer you the chance to explore your interests and find the course that is just right for you. Whether you see yourself as a budding artist or designer, a future film maker, make-up artist, fashion designer or animator we can help you develop the skills you need.

What will you do?

Our joint Creative Arts courses at Entry 3 and Level 1 can help you try a range of new skills including art and design, media and performing arts, which will help you decide the direction you want to go in.

How will you learn?

Learning through tutor-led practical and work-related activities, you will develop your skills in drawing, painting and using different techniques.

You will learn about a range of different subjects in art and media such as graphic design, fashion illustration, textiles, photography.

How are you assessed?

Continuous assessment by your tutors on a regular basis throughout the year and you will receive informal and formal assessment reviews as well as regular tutorials and progress reviews.

You need:

An interest in learning more about the creative arts, including design, media, and performing arts.

What do you need to know?

This course will be delivered at The Skills Academy in Billingham.

What’s next?

You could move on to a relevant Level 2 course, specialising in Art & Design, Creative Media, Film Production, Production Arts or Performing Arts.

Basic art and design equipment will be required. You will be provided with a list at induction

Destinations and progression

The progression from this course is excellent and students have gone on to do a range of courses and subjects. Some students have progressed to level 2 and 3 Art and Design and level 2 and 3 ICT. Some students have also gone on to apprenticeships. The skills that you will learn on this course will prepare you for a wide range of options.

Extra-curricular activities

You will take part in enrichment activities such as sports and enterprise, where you will get a chance to produce art work to sell.

Prince’s Trust Billingham Team

Are you out of work and not sure what you want to do next?

The Skills Academy offers the Prince’s Trust Team programme, a free 12- week personal development course for those aged 16-25 that will build your skills and looks good on your CV. It is good fun, you will make new friends, gain work experience and a qualification. (All travel expenses are reimbursed and existing benefits are not affected)

Attendance: Full time

Duration: 12 weeks

Location: The Skills Academy

What will you do?

This is a hands-on course that will see you take part in a range of activities including community projects, fun challenges, team building, and you’ll go on an adventure residential. You will also gain work experience, get interview tips and work on your CV.

How will you learn?

By taking part in practical tasks and activities in the team room and the wider community. You will learn to develop your confidence and motivation and be encouraged and supported throughout.

How are you assessed?

Assessment is made on your portfolio of evidence generated by the practical activities that you take part in throughout the 12 weeks.

You must be up for a challenge and willing to give 100%.

Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development Entry Level 3/Level 1

Our Employability course is made to meet your needs. Offering you the chance to take part in a range of activities, you will develop skills that will help you to increase your independence, progress into further study or possibly move into work.

What will you do?

Offering a personalised course that meets your requirements, you will take part in a variety of activities to build your confidence and skills, with the opportunity to carry out work experience or a vocational placement.

How will I be assessed?

You will be required to complete activities throughout the year and record your work in workbooks which will make up your learning file.

What are the entry requirements?

No qualifications or prior knowledge are needed for entry to the course. A willingness to learn and to try new subject areas is necessary.

What’s next?

You could move on to further study, work, support or voluntary work, or more independent living.

Hair, Beauty & Catering Level 1

Level 1 Award in Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Industry
Level 1 Award in Introduction to the Hospitality Industry

This course will combine technical skills and underpinning knowledge to allow learners to experience and develop life skills whilst introducing them to the Hair, Beauty and Catering Industries.

What will you do?

You will take part in both theory and practical sessions to develop technical skills in beauty, hairdressing and catering. You will also attend maths and English lessons, work on My Work Search and take part in enrichment and work experience opportunities.

Learners will produce a written portfolio and be assessed on their practical skills.

Introduction to IT Level 1

Everyone needs I.T. skills whether you are at work, home or even on the move. This course is for those who have a grasp of the basics but want to build on that knowledge. You will learn how to design and build digital products, enabling you to use digital tools as a means to inform, persuade and entertain. It will develop your creativity and independent learning skills.

Attendance: Full time

Start date: September 2018

Duration: One year

Location: The Skills Academy

What will you do?

Offering hands-on practical experience you’ll learn a range of skills including; how computer systems work, how to protect computers and data, how to program a computer, how to design and create your own spreadsheet and how to manage an IT project.

How will you learn?

Learning through tutor-led practical and work-related activities, including workshops, demonstrations and theory to develop knowledge, skills and understanding.

How are you assessed?

All subjects will be assessed through a summative project brief, consisting of practical activities, resulting in a portfolio of evidence.

You need:

An Entry Level 3 IT qualification, two GCSEs grade 2/E or an IT assessment.

What’s next?

Progress to a relevant Level 2 course such as the Level 2 Technical Diploma in IT.

Digital Media Level 1

This course introduces you to basic Creative Digital Media practices, skills and techniques. You will have the opportunity to work with interesting and diverse projects whilst gaining an understanding of the subject. You will experiment with your ideas, look at the work media practitioners in a variety of disciplines, such as film, digital graphics, animation, web and advertising. You will build a creative portfolio throughout the year and showcase your skills.

Attendance: Full time

Start date: September 2018

Duration: One year

Location: The Skills Academy

What will you do?

You will cover all aspects of digital media in a practical and exciting way, including how to create animations and advertisements, how to make a short film and how to create a website. You will also learn about research and planning.

How will you learn?

You will complete assignments while learning through both hands-on, practical work and classroom teaching. The emphasis is on project development through written and practical skills, applied both individually and through teamwork.

How are you assessed?

There will be internally assessed practical assignments throughout the course.

You need:

To demonstrate a desire and enthusiasm for studying creative media production.

What’s next?

Move on to Creative Media Level 2.
