There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners will need to be at least 19 years of age. Learners will need to be working or volunteering in a school environment as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. This placement must be organised by the learner prior to starting the course.
This qualification will enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in the school environment. It is suitable for learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants. It is made up of mandatory and optional units which are based on knowledge and skills including optional units that allow learners to achieve above the level of qualification

Learners will have a variety of taught sessions, workshops and placement opportunities for learning
To gain the qualification learners will need to achieve at least a PASS grade in each of the academic units and will complete at 180 hours in a placement either on a paid or voluntary basis working with children aged 5 years +
Learners will be able to progress to a broad range of destinations including:
• Level 3 supporting teaching and learning in school
• Level 3 diploma for the children and young people’s workforce
• Access to employment
• 10 week SEN course (additional after completion of STL level 2)
