A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for. The programme is for young people aged 16 to 24 who have little to no work place experience. Traineeships can last anything from ten weeks to six months.

The basic requirements for a traineeship are:
A meaningful, high quality, work experience placement of at least 100 hours with an employer, providing a real insight and experience into the world of work
Work preparation training which will be delivered by Stockton Riverside College
English and maths support (if required) provided by Stockton Riverside College

Throughout your busy periods, trainees can provide extra support or your team.
How long does a traineeship last?
Traineeships last anything up to a maximum of six months depending on the needs of the individual.
What would be my responsibilities as an employer?
You will need to commit to a high quality work placement, lasting at least six weeks.
This should include:
Pre-agreed content and objectives between your company, the training organisation and the trainee.
A structured opportunity for the young person, matched to their areas of interest and aspiration, where they engage in purposeful learning activities rather than observation.
The work experience placement should be long enough to allow for the development of new skills and behaviours.
Trainees should receive coaching and training from an identified mentor in the business, receiving regular constructive feedback.
Employers are not required to pay young people taking part in traineeships but are encouraged to support trainees with expenses such as transport and meals.
What happens when a traineeship is completed?
Once the young person has finished their traineeship with your company, you will be required to offer:
Ideally, an interview for a position within your business if one is available.
If no apprenticeship or job opportunity is available within your business, you will be required to provide an exit interview together with meaningful written feedback to help your trainee go on to secure an apprenticeship or employment.

Stockton broadcaster Ignition Radio has been working in partnership with Stockton Riverside College to help budding journalists, presenters and editors to develop industry-relevant skills.
Offering a 12-week traineeship, station manager Tony Beards said: “This proved a good way of giving young people an insight into the organisation before taking on the commitment of an apprenticeship.”
For the charity organisation which is run by a team of volunteers, Tony said the trainees proved an asset to the workforce. Not only did they bring fresh ideas but they were also able to take on real projects and assist with the day-to-day running of the community station.
“The Traineeship was fantastic,” said Tony. With several trainees moving on to further industry relevant training, other courses or employment, the station hopes to repeat the success with plans in place to launch a second traineeship.
