Basic IT

Start date: TBC
Duration: 4 weeks

What will you do?

This course has been designed for learners that require very basic IT skills. Learners will cover the following:

  • Knowing the device – smart phone or tablet
  • App downloads including gov.uk app
  • Basic internet search to include job search activities
  • Social media for the workplace

Learners will leave the course with a reference guide of what they have covered to enable them to work independently following the course and possible an entry level employability qualification if appropriate.

You need:

Aged 16+, unemployed and have very basic ICT needs.

You will receive:

  • FREE tuition
  • FREE examination costs
  • FREE use of specialist equipment including the Internet
  • FREE access to online training resources
  • FREE use of the Learning Resource Centre
  • FREE specialist Information, Advice and Guidance

Restaurant Academy (Fork in the Road)

Start date: 10th September 2018
Duration: 6 weeks
Days and times: Monday – Friday 9.30am – 3.00pm
Location: Teesdale

The training academy will be delivered at Stockton Riverside College, over a 4 week period.  Training will include:

Phase 1 – Academy 

  • Team Building and Interpersonal Skills
  • Customer Service
  • Food hygiene certificate
  • Emergency first aid certificate
  • Personal and professional behaviours
  • Cleaning awareness and techniques
  • Health and Safety awareness
  • Manual handling
  • Target setting and personal/professional goals
  • Employment preparation and interview skills
  • Tour of Stockton Riverside College catering facilities and practical session
  • Interview with employer

All learners completing the Academy will be guaranteed an interview with the employer.

Phase 2 – In work training and support

All learners that complete the 4 week training will be interviewed by the Employer with a view to being given a 2 week work experience trial.

Employees will undertake a variety of tasks during a 2 week period of work experience. Work experience will take place at either Fork in the Road or one of the Stockton Riverside College Catering Establishments.

There are potential employment opportunities at Fork in the Road for suitable candidates following completion of training and work experience.

You need:

Aged 16+, unemployed and have an interest in hospitality and catering.

First Aid at Work

This Health & Safety Executive approved course provides all the necessary training for personnel who wish to gain a recognised first aid certificate.  On satisfactory completion of the in-house assessment exercises, certification (lasting 3 years) will be awarded.

What will I study?

  • priorities in an emergency – what to treat/refer
  • causes of asphyxia, resuscitation and recovery position
  • wounds and bleeding
  • unconsciousness
  • fractures of upper/lower limbs and spine
  • burns and scalds, poisons
  • recognition of major/minor illness, eye injuries
  • written/practical examination

Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will be:

  • able to carry out an effective resuscitation technique
  • aware of treatment for major/minor injuries
  • able to select the correct treatment for burns, scalds and poisons
  • aware of HSE requirements re: reporting of accidents and contents of first-aid boxes
  • able to assess/deal with injuries to bones, joints, muscles

 

How will I be assessed?

A practical assessment will be carried out on the last day of the course.  It is advised that all attendees should have a full range of mobility.

Who should attend?

Individuals whose intention it is to practice first aid in the workplace during the validity of the first aid certificate (3 years).

RSPH Level 3 Award in Food Safety and Hygiene

This is a three day course which covers the principles of food hygiene for caterers and other food handlers.

What will I study?

  • Food safety legislation and legal responsibilities
  • Personal hygiene
  • Temperature control, cleaning and disinfection
  • Safety management procedures
  • Contamination and Microbiology

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of implementing food safety and management procedures
  • Understand the importance of personal hygiene
  • Know how to keep the working area clean and hygienic
  • Identify signs of and actions to be taken for pest control
  • Know correct safety procedures for food preparation, storage and temperature control
  • Identify hazards posed by, and procedures to control, microbiology, chemical, physical and allergenic contamination

How will I be assessed?

There is a multiple choice exam at the end of the course.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements.

Who should attend?

You should ideally already possess a level 2 qualification but this is not mandatory. You should have a knowledge and understanding of the importance of food hygiene, associated food hazards, good hygiene practice and controls based upon an awareness of food safety management systems. Holders will know how to maintain good practice in the handling, processing and preparation of safe food.

How much does the course cost?

£150 per person. This is a full cost course with no remissions available.

Introduction to Cake Decorating

Learn some of the techniques of cake decoration. The aim of this course is to have fun in a relaxed and friendly environment.
