CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice
The CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice represents the final academic stage towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive. Building on the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, learners are required to demonstrate a broad and detailed understanding of the law in three specific areas. There is also a focus on the professional aspects of the role and assessment on practical application. This course is perfect for someone who wants to become a Chartered Legal Executive or a Fellow of CILEx, or for someone who wants to further their position in the work place.

What will you do?
The CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice consists of six units in total, three of which will be chosen law units and one practice unit which links to one (or more) of the law units, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation, or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. You will also need to complete two legal skills units, Client Care and Legal Research. There are a total of 14 law units to choose from including, but not limited to, Land Law, Tort Law, Immigration Law and Employment Law. Your unit options will be discussed at the interview stage.
How will you learn?
You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.
How are you assessed?
You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year.
You must hold one of the following:
- CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice
- BA (Hons) in Law
If you have an LLB in Law you may be eligible to complete the one-year Level 6 ‘Fast-Track Diploma’.
What do you need to know?
The Professional Higher Diploma is delivered to provide you with a more detailed knowledge into Law and Practice in a given legal area.
Usually learners will be working in a law firm or legal department as a Chartered Legal Executive upon completion of this course. Other learners have gone on to do more academic studies, such as an LPC. Chartered Legal Executives can then apply to become Fellows once they have completed the relevant work-based training element.
How do I apply/enrol?
You can apply for this course by visiting the college’s website: www.stockton.ac.uk and following the link for applications. The course is delivered at the SRC Bede Sixth Form site in Billingham. Once your application is received you will be invited in for an informal interview either in person or over the phone to accommodate your busy schedule.
There are two enrolment opportunities each year, one in August and one in January. The first enrolment period will take place 20th August 2018 until the 7th September 2018. The second enrolment period will take place 7th January 2019 until 18th January 2019.
Destinations and Progress:
Most learners who complete the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice will progress to become a Chartered Legal Executive or Fellow of CILEx once they have secured a job in a law firm or legal department and completed the necessary work-based component of the course.
When will the course be delivered?
The course will be delivered one day per week on an afternoon and evening to accommodate those who are working already in the profession, or those who have other work commitments. Details of the timetable will be discussed at the interview stage.
How much will the course cost?
The cost of the course is £3,590 over two years. This includes your tuition, one attempt at exam/coursework entry, your membership and registration to CILEx, and a course manual for each of the units you will study. This price does not include any fees that need paying directly to CILEx for exemptions or the qualifying employment application fee. You may be eligible for some funding to go towards your course fees.

Extra information and extra-curricular activities:
Each learner will be assigned a personal tutor who will guide them through their study and will meet regularly to discuss progress and individual learner needs. We also have a careers adviser who can help with CV’s, job searches and interview techniques when it comes to applying for jobs in the legal sector.
Trips to the law courts are also included for those who wish to see the law in action. Networking events can also be arranged from time to time to help learners build links with people working in the profession.
