At SRC Bede Sixth Form we offer A Level Law and BTEC Applied Law, both of which can be studied as part of a selection of A level and BTEC courses.

 

CILEx courses

Stockton Riverside College is one of the only colleges north of Leeds able to offer both the Level 3 and Level 6 qualifications in Law and Practice on a face-to-face basis.

Our tutors are highly skilled professionals who have a vast knowledge of the law and have experience of teaching law at all levels, including A-Level, CILEx Level 3 and Level 6, and Degree.

Our CILEx courses are delivered at SRC Bede Sixth Form on a part-time basis.

A Level and equivalent

BTEC Applied Law

This course will give you an insight into how the law operates in practice. You will look at both aspects of criminal and civil law, in particular, the procedures used at the police station, criminal trials and personal injury claims. You will be given the opportunity to work in your own “law firm” and deal with potential real-life situations. You will handle your own case load as if you were working in the profession. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone considering a profession in law, or with an interested in the law.

What will you study?

In your first year you will learn about the different types of courts and the cases that are dealt with in those courts, including both criminal and civil cases. You will learn about the different sources of law and how laws are developed through the courts and parliament and how they are interpreted by the judiciary. You will specialise in Criminal Law and the Law surrounding Negligence.

In your second year you will specialise in specific areas of law, including the Law of Tort, in relation to personal injury and psychiatric injury, and Criminal Law, in relation to homicide offences and property offences. You will also discover the powers that the police have in relation to arrest and detention. You will also discover the legal principles surrounding those areas of law.


How will I learn?

You will learn through interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments.


How will I be assessed?

The assessment will be ongoing throughout the course allowing you to track your own progress and improve as the course progresses.


You need:

To have achieved A*/9-C/4 grades in at least five GCSE programmes, and you must have either GCSE English or GCSE Maths.


What’s next?

Most students progress onto university to study a law degree, but there are other options available. You could enrol with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives or carry out a legal apprenticeship.

How do I apply?

Law

The law governs everything we do and will affect everyone’s lives, including your own, at some point, whether that’s buying your first car or house. This course is full of interesting topics such as Criminal Liability for crimes such as murder, manslaughter and theft. It will also cover Civil Liability in relation to personal injury and the court procedures involved. So whether you want to become a solicitor or barrister or just simply want to know more about the law, this course is guaranteed to spark your passion for problem solving and debating.

What will I study?

Over the two years you will learn about the court system and where laws come from. You will also cover a wide range of legal areas, including criminal law, the Law of Tort and Human Rights. You will learn about police investigations and judges sentencing.


How will I learn?

You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.


How will I be assessed?

This qualification is 100% exam based. You will complete three exams at the end of your two year course. You will be internally assessed throughout the two years to help you monitor your progress.


You need:

To have achieved A*/9-C/4 grades in at least seven GCSE programmes, and must have GCSE English and Maths.


What do you need to know?a

There is no pre-requisite required for this course.

A-level law is delivered on a practical basis. It gives you an insight into how the law operates in practice. You will be given fictional scenarios based on real life cases to work on to build your analysis skills.


What’s next?

Most students will go to university to study a law degree. Others may wish to take the legal executive route and join the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives straight after college. Some students even go on to complete an apprenticeship in legal services. Other students have joined the police force or gone on to work in politics.

Extra-curricular activities:

Trips to the law courts are included within the course. An annual trip to London where we visit the Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey is also available for students. We will also visit Parliament Square and look at the Supreme Court, the highest court within the English Legal System.

CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice

The CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice is a paralegal qualification aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in law without having to go to university. The Level 3 Certificate comprises of a flexible introduction to a specific area of Law and Legal Practice. It will allow learners to understand the professional legal skills necessary to begin to research the Law and work with clients. Whether you are wanting to become a Fellow of CILEx, someone who wants to progress in their line of work, or are seeking an introduction to Law and Legal Practice, this course is for you.

Attendance: Part-time

Start date: September 2019 or January 2020

Duration: 1 Year

What will you do?

The CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice consists of five units in total which are individually accumulated. The core units consist of an introduction into law and practice and two practical legal skills (coursework/research) components. You will then choose two linked units, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation, or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation.


How will you learn?

You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.


How are you assessed?

You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year.


You need:

Entry requirements are five GCSEs, or equivalent, at grade 4/C or above, including English Language or English Literature.


What do you need to know?

There is no requirement to have any background in the law before you undertake this qualification. The Certificate is delivered to provide you with an introduction into Law and Practice in a given legal area.


What’s next?

Learners will usually progress onto the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, however, the Certificate is a stand-alone qualification. Many learners will seek employment as a Paralegal either during or following the completion of this qualification.

Other learners may go off to university to study a Law Degree or enrol onto a legal apprenticeship, or may go straight into employment and work as a Paralegal in a law firm.

CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is the first stage of professional training, designed for learners who want to progress to the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, and who want ultimately to become Chartered Legal Executives or Fellows of CILEx. The qualification can also be used as a top-up to those who have studied the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice. Whether you are wanting to become a Fellow of CILEx, someone who wants to progress in their line of work, or are seeking an introduction to Law and Legal Practice, this course is for you.

Attendance: Part-time

Start date: September 2019 or January 2020

Duration: 2 Years (or 1 year top-up)

What will you do?

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice consists of ten units in total which are each assessed by CILEx and accumulated by the learner. You will need to complete seven core units, including Introduction to Law and Practice, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Tort Law, Land Law, Legal Research and Client Care.

You will also need to complete two practice units, which link to the law units you have studied, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation, or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. You will then be able to choose one optional law unit to complete, from either Family Law, Employment Law, or Wills and Succession.

If you have completed the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice, you will only need to pick up the five remaining units (including your optional unit) to complete the course.


How will you learn?

You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.


How are you assessed?

CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice

The CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice represents the final academic stage towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive. Building on the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, learners are required to demonstrate a broad and detailed understanding of the law in three specific areas. There is also a focus on the professional aspects of the role and assessment on practical application. This course is perfect for someone who wants to become a Chartered Legal Executive or a Fellow of CILEx, or for someone who wants to further their position in the work place.

Duration: 2 Years

What will you do?

The CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice consists of six units in total, three of which will be chosen law units and one practice unit which links to one (or more) of the law units, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation, or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. Other learners have gone on to do more academic studies, such as an LPC. Chartered Legal Executives can then apply to become Fellows once they have completed the relevant work-based training element.

CILEx Level 6 Single Subject Certificate

The CILEx Level 6 Single Subject Certificate is aimed at recognising a person’s achievements in a specific area of law or legal practice. This course is best suited for learners who do not wish to go on and become a Chartered Legal Executive or Fellow of CILEx, but who do want to achieve recognition in a specific professional area of law or legal practice. The Certificate qualification is a valuable asset to any professional paralegal or individual, working in a legal firm and specialising in an area of law or legal practice which requires a qualification which recognises their ability at that level within that area.

Start date: September 2019 or January 2020

Duration: 1 Year

What will you do?

The CILEx Level 6 Single Subject Certificate allows learners to choose from a range of law, practice and legal skills units (total of 22 areas), and each unit is self-contained. Examples of units include, but not limited to, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Land Law, Employment Law, Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Client Care Skills, etc.


How will you learn?

You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.


How are you assessed?

You will be assessed by way of external examination. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year. Those who chose the Professional Skills unit will submit coursework.


Entry requirements:

Your must hold an appropriate Level 3 qualification, or must have completed the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice.


What do you need to know?

The Level 6 Single Subject Certificate allows for those who are already working in practice to achieve a higher level qualification in their specialist area. It also allows for an introduction into the Level 6 Professional Diploma to become a Chartered Legal Executive.


What’s next?

Usually learners will be working in a law firm or legal department upon completion of this course. Other learners have gone on to do more academic studies, such as an LPC, or progress onto the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice to work towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive. Chartered Legal Executives can then apply to become Fellows once they have completed the relevant work-based training element.

CILEx Level 6 Graduate ‘Fast Track’ Diploma

The CILEx Graduate ‘Fast Track’ Diploma is designed solely to accredit legal practice knowledge and understanding. It is aimed at learners who have a qualifying law degree and wish to enter into the legal profession without having to secure an elusive training contract. The CILEx Graduate ‘Fast Track’ Diploma provides a streamlined and cost-effective way to achieve access to CILEx membership. This course is perfect for someone who wants to become a Chartered Legal Executive or a Fellow of CILEx, or for someone who wants to further their position in the work place.

The CILEx Level 6 Graduate ‘Fast Track’ Diploma consists of the learner taking a combination of Practice units and Professional Skills. Learners must also complete the Client Care Skills unit as part of the qualification.

Learners who are looking to complete the Graduate ‘Fast Track’ Diploma will need to have a qualifying Law Degree and will need to go through an exemptions process prior to starting the course.
