CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice
The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is the first stage of professional training, designed for learners who want to progress to the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, and who want ultimately to become Chartered Legal Executives or Fellows of CILEx. The qualification can also be used as a top-up to those who have studied the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice. Whether you are wanting to become a Fellow of CILEx, someone who wants to progress in their line of work, or are seeking an introduction to Law and Legal Practice, this course is for you.
Start date: January 2020 or September 2020
Duration: 2 Years (or 1 year top-up)
Location: Bede Sixth Form College
What will you do?
The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice consists of ten units in total which are each assessed by CILEx and accumulated by the learner. You will need to complete seven core units, including Introduction to Law and Practice, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Tort Law, Land Law, Legal Research and Client Care.
You will also need to complete two practice units, which link to the law units you have studied, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation, or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. You will then be able to choose one optional law unit to complete, from either Family Law, Employment Law, or Wills and Succession.
If you have completed the CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice, you will only need to pick up the five remaining units (including your optional unit) to complete the course.
How will you learn?
You will learn through a variety of methods such as interactive lectures, video tutorials, mock trials, visits to the courts and more. You will also receive resource packs and extra support in the run up to assessments. You will experience different learning techniques to ensure the needs of each learner are met.
How are you assessed?
You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year.
Entry requirements are 5 GCSEs, or equivalent, at grade C/4 or above, including English Language or English Literature.
What do you need to know?
There is no requirement to have any background in the law before you undertake this qualification. The Professional Diploma is delivered to provide you with an introduction into Law and Practice in a given legal area.
Learners will usually progress onto the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice, however, the Level 3 Professional Diploma is a stand-alone qualification. Many learners will seek employment as a Paralegal either during or following the completion of this qualification.
How do I apply/enrol?
You can apply for this course by visiting the college’s website: www.stockton.ac.uk and following the link for applications. The course is delivered at the SRC Bede Sixth Form site in Billingham. Once your application is received you will be invited in for an informal interview either in person or over the phone to accommodate your busy schedule.
There are two enrolment opportunities each year, one in August and one in January.*
Destinations and Progress:
Most students on CILEx will progress onto the CILEx Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice and become a Chartered Legal Executive or Fellow of CILEx once they have secured a job in a law firm or legal department and completed the necessary work-based component of the course.
Other learners may go off to university to study a Law Degree or enrol onto a legal apprenticeship, and some may go straight into employment and work as a Paralegal in a law firm.
When will the course be delivered?
The course is delivered one day per week on an afternoon and evening to accommodate those who are working already in the profession, or those who have other work commitments. Details of the timetable will be discussed at the interview stage.
How much will the course cost?
The cost of the course is £2765, £1265 for year one and £1500 for year two*. This fee does not include additional costs for exam and coursework entry, your membership and registration with CILEx, any course materials and any fees that need paying directly to CILEx for exemptions.
You may be eligible for some funding to go towards your course fees. For more information on the funding and payment options available please contact the course leader by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or 01642 373250.
Extra information and extra-curricular activities:
Each learner will be assigned a personal tutor who will guide them through their study and will meet regularly to discuss progress and individual learner needs. We also have a careers adviser who can help with CV’s, job searches and interview techniques when it comes to applying for jobs in the legal sector.
Trips to the law courts are also included for those who wish to see the law in action. Networking events can also be arranged from time to time to help learners build links with people working in the profession.
