Foundation Diploma in Shipping & Port Agency – £1455

In order to achieve the Foundation Diploma candidates must complete both subjects, however, subjects can be done as standalone modules at £875.

Shipping Business Module

Attendance: fortnightly 4.00pm-6.30pm including exam revision sessions

Start date: November 2020

Duration: 16 weeks

Location: Teesdale

Introduction:

The Shipping Business Module is a module from the Advanced Diploma. It has been designed as a stepping stone towards full professional qualification and suits those who have some industry knowledge. Like the Foundation Diploma, the Advanced Diploma is a recognised and respected qualification and it can count towards Professional Qualifying Examinations.

What will you do?

You will cover:

  • Shipping Business – shipping business entity; shipping business sectors; business ethics; geography of trade; international trade and finance; business communications; shipping organisations – their role and contribution

How will I learn?

Your learning will take place through a range of methods including classroom-based lectures, additional research, exam practice using past papers and workshop activities.

How am I assessed?

Each module will be assessed by written exam, held in May 2021.

You need:

A high level of English and maths, as the exams require detailed written answers, including accounting and calculations.

Introduction:

The Foundation Diploma is ideal for people with little industry experience, but who would like to gain practical knowledge and a sound qualification.

The Foundation Diploma is a standalone qualification in its own right, but because it can count towards membership examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, it is also a great way to ease into study and gives an overall view of the business.

What will you do?

You will cover two modules:

  • Introduction to Shipping – commercial geography; international trade; cargoes and trade routes; ship types; contracts of carriage; law of carriage; ship registration and classification; practitioners in shipping business; basic accounting
  • Port Agency – ships; cargoes and trade routes; registration, classification and surveys; port agency operations; shipping documentation; charter parties; port working documentation; cargo documentation; legal aspects of port agency; accounts
