Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Photographic Make-up     

The main aim of the Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Photographic Make-up is to enable learners to gain the necessary practical skills and knowledge in order to provide Hair and Photographic make-up to the general public and to gain employment in the Hair and Photographic Make-up industry.

What will you do?

You will learn skills including styling, setting and dressing of hair. You will develop the skills in the Art of Photographic makeup and how to apply makeup correctly. This course also involves skin tanning techniques and the shaping and colouring of eyebrows. You will also learn about the importance of client care and communication skills this also includes health and safety.

How will I learn?

Lessons include a combination of practical demonstrations, theory and e-learning. You are continually assessed throughout the course by building your e-portfolio of work, which contains your evidence of your competence in each of the technical and related skills.

How am I assessed?

You will be assessed carrying out practical assessments and observations, oral questioning, theory/multiple choice tests. You will carry out online exams while building an e-portfolio.

You need:

NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing/Beauty Level 1 or three GCSEs grade 4/C.

19+ exemptions may be made to adult returners with experience in the workplace.

As a barber or stylist you will need to work out hair colour ratios, follow instructions, order stock, calculate timings for appointments and treatments and handle cash.


What’s next?

You could go on to the NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3.


What else do I need to know?

You will be required to attend classes in full college uniform. You will be required to bring your kit to practical sessions. Functional Skills/GCSE attendance is compulsory unless you have grade 4/C in maths and English.

Creatively colour and lighten hair.
Creatively style hair and colour correction.


How will I learn?

You will learn through practical demonstrations, practical and theory as well as through e-learning. This course enables you to develop the necessary interpersonal skills. You will be taught using up to date resources that are appropriate to your individual learning style.


You need:

NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 2.


Why Maths and English matter…

As a barber or stylist you will need to work out hair colour ratios, follow instructions, order stock, calculate timings for appointments and treatments and handle cash.


What’s next?

You could go on to find work as a senior stylist, salon manager or assessor.


What else do I need to know?

You will need to organise a placement in a hairdressing salon. This will be one day a week from September to December.

What will you do?

Shampoo, condition, cut and style men’s hair. You will learn to cut men’s facial hair. You will also learn about health and safety, client care and communication skills which are essential to work and be successful in the barbering in industry.


How will you learn?

You are continually assessed throughout the course by building your e-portfolio of work, which contains evidence of your competence in each of the technical and related skills.


You need:

A keen interest in the barbering industry.


Why Maths and English matter…

As a barber or stylist you will need to work out hair colour ratios, follow instructions, order stock, calculate timings for appointments and treatments and handle cash.


What’s next?

You could go on to the NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 3 or find employment in a variety of areas: men’s hairdressing/barber shops, freelance, barbering business, barbering apprenticeship.

Attendance: 8 hours week

Duration: 34 weeks

What will you do?

Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques, design and create a range of facial hair shapes and provide shaving services.
You will also learn about related health and safety, client care and communication skills which are essential to work and be successful in the barbering industry.


How will I learn?

You are continually assessed throughout the course by building your e- portfolio of work, which contains evidence of your competence in each of the technical and related skills.


You need:

Level 2 Barbering qualification.


What’s next?

You can gain employment as a barber, salon manager, session barber, product sales rep, assessor.

The ITEC Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering confirms full occupational competence leading to employability at Level 3 in a Barbering Salon.

Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to get into the world of work and earn real money whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications.

If you are a school leaver, currently unemployed or looking to start a new career, Stockton Riverside College can help you to find the right Apprenticeship and employer for you.

Barbering Apprenticeships

Barbering Apprenticeships provide employees with the skills needed for a career in Barbering. Interacting with clients, hair preparation and keeping the salon looking good are all activities which will enable apprentices to gain the full experience of the day to day needs of a busy salon.

Main Duties:

As a level 2 apprentice, your duties may include:
• Greeting customers
• Shampooing hair
• Simple cutting
• Making sure towels and supplies are ready for use
• Keeping the salon clean and tidy
• Making appointments and handling payments
• Ordering materials

As a level 3 apprentice, your duties may include:
• Shampooing and treating hair
• Using barbering techniques to create different looks
• Styling and finishing hair
• Cutting and shaping facial hair

Assessment:

Level 2:

The way that apprenticeships are delivered is changing. Some apprenticeships now include an end-point assessment which includes:
• A multiple choice short answer test
• An observation of practice which is undertaken in the workplace
• A learning journal to reflect on the last 3 months of your apprenticeship
• A presentation

You will be supported throughout the process by your assessor.

Level 3:

You will be allocated a course tutor/assessor to provide guided learning and support with assignments. You will be observed in the workplace by your allocated assessor.

You need:

Apprenticeships require a good level of English, maths and/or ICT. Our initial assessment and your GCSE results will help inform us of your ability and what support we can offer to get you to the level required.

If you do not hold the relevant GCSEs you will need to complete the Functional Skills qualifications as part of your apprenticeship.

You must be:

  • at least 16
  • a UK resident
  • in employment. We can help with this

To undertake a level 3 apprenticeship, you need a level 2 qualification or to have experience in a relevant field.

Duration:

Level 2: typically 18 months
Level 3: typically 15 months

Hairdressing Apprenticeships

The level 2 apprenticeship will provide you with basic hairdressing skills to kick-start you on the road to becoming a fully-qualified hairdresser. You will study topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection.
The skills developed throughout the level 2 apprenticeship will be built upon in the level 3 apprenticeship.

Main Duties:

As a level 2 apprentice, duties may include:
• Booking appointments
• Shampooing
• Conditioning
• Drying and styling hair
• Mixing and applying hair colouring

As a level 3 apprentice, duties may include:
• Creatively cutting hair
• Colouring hair
• Colour correction
• Creatively styling and dressing hair
• Providing hair extension services

Assessment:

Level 2:

Depending on your previous grades you may need to study English and Maths. These are essential skills that all employers value. Your tutor can answer any questions you have regarding this.

Work experience/employability

We want to help you develop real skills for real jobs. That’s why we work closely with a wide range of employers to ensure all of our courses give you the skills that they are looking for in their future employees. We know that getting real experience of your chosen field is vital that’s why we build practical skills and hands-on experience into our courses. Our dedicated online program ‘My Work Search’ will help prepare you for future job opportunities.

Social and personal development

You’ll get the opportunity to develop a range of additional skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team, customer service skills, time management and use of ICT and our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). You may also take part in charity fundraising events. Your tutor will be able to tell you more about course specific developments.
