Biology is at the forefront of 21st century science as we continue to unlock the secrets of life at a rapid pace. By studying biology at A level you’ll be immersed in cutting-edge developments and will experience dynamic lessons in our dedicated and energetic department.

You will build a solid knowledge in areas including biochemistry, evolution, ecology, genetics and anatomy. Lessons are interactive and engaging and you’ll get the chance to practise a variety of lab techniques.

Links are established with local universities and industry to allow for field trips and visits, and students may have the chance to take part in international competitions (where previous students have won awards).

The course is delivered using a variety of interactive and engaging teaching methods. You will be involved in practical activities alongside theory sessions to enhance your experience. Regular homework tasks will be included to reinforce learning.

Assessment is by examination, including three final exams (2 x 2 hour 30 minute; 1 x 1 hour 30 minute). Students carry out a range of experiments throughout the course which will lead to the Practical Endorsement.

GCSE Additional Science or Biology higher level grade 6/B or above, plus GCSEs in Maths and English, at grade 4/C or above.

Practical skills are embedded within this course and you will develop a portfolio to demonstrate your competence.

You could go on to specialise in a wide range of subjects including: veterinary science, medicine, optometry, psychology, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, sports science, microbiology, forensic science, biophysics, genetics, neuroscience, botany, zoology, ecology and environmental science and of course, biology!

Some recent student destinations include: Nursing studies at Teesside, Neuroscience at Kings College London, Medicine at Oxford, Microbiology at Sheffield, Veterinary Science at Royal Veterinary College, and Biopharmaceutical Science at Sunderland.
