Chelsea

Anything is possible for Chealsea, age 19, from Roseworth, who has managed to secure a place working for Anchor Hanover, a specialist housing and care provider.

The former student at Bishopsgarth, is currently studying her Level 4 in Higher Education certificate in Health and Social Care alongside her part-time work as a Care Assistant at Anchor Hanover at Millbeck. She says, “I absolutely love my job.”

Chelsea was excited to start studying at SRC to pursue her dream career a Social Worker because it offered a route into the care industry.

She says her dream has always been to work in the care industry with either the elderly or children. Not only has the course helped improve her communication skills, but it has also provided her with practical experience in a real work setting.

She says, “I loved studying both the Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social care.”

She says, “I especially loved the placements as I got to experience real work settings while focusing on both theory and practical work. I really enjoy being hands on and I learn better when I’m not just stuck writing in a classroom and copying off the board.”

Chelsea was thrilled with the support from tutors and said they always made themselves accessible, and were always on hand to explain the assignments or any of her questions.

“One of the best things about my course was that there was so much to learn. Improving my communication skills and ‘Developing Effective Practising’ were very enjoyable elements of the course. At level 3, we learned about anatomy and physiology, which taught me about things I didn’t even know existed. We were also educated on some of the elements of the body and this was very fascinating.”

I would 100% recommend the course to others. The tutors were always there for support, the resources were always available at the LRC, and the subjects were very interesting.

The course provided Chelsea with placements in care homes, where she carried out part-time work. “This was just amazing,” she says. “Listening to stories from residents were so interesting and fun.”

Her plans for the future include heading to Teesside university to pursue her career in Social Work.

Chelsea’s advice to others is: “Apply for the experience that you get, the friends you’ll make, and the supportive tutors. You’ll receive an amazing qualification at the end of it and it’s all worth it. Keep on top of your assignments, and you’ll fly through it. Put the time in and you’ll also receive such a prestigious qualification”.

Beth

Beth is very excited to pursue her dream career as a Paramedic.

Beth from Billingham, age 18, and former student of Northfield School, is currently studying her level 3 in Health and Social Care.

She chose to study at Stockton Riverside College because she enjoyed the calm atmosphere it provided. She says she always enjoyed studying about health at school so the Health and Social Care Course really stood out for her in the Prospectus when it arrived through the post.

She says, “I absolutely love learning here, there is no reason not to like it.” She says the tutors are very understanding and their background in NHS means they all bring something different to the learning process.”

Beth goes on to say, “it’s fun because it entails more than just research, I’m always going on various placements which means I get to try out all the practical things involved.”

She loves everything and says, “Though assignments are hard, they are enjoyable. My communication skills have definitely improved and I’m always learning on the go. The course covers so many broad categories and not just the basics. The care home videos that we watch demonstrate the psychological elements involved in the people lives. However, the class debates are my favourite. Sometimes in class, we’ll have ‘agree/disagree’ debates where we discuss whether people’s actions are determined through their mental health or their upbringing, and I love participating in that.

She says, “I would absolutely recommend Stockton Riverside College to others, as not only has it helped develop my character and taught me to remain calm, the college offers great progression such as the available Higher Education courses into the Health and Social Care industry.

She hopes to go to university next year to study as a Paramedic and specialise in mental health and forensic because she believes not many paramedics are given the chance to specialise in particular fields. She says there are not enough people to help, and paramedics are under a lot of pressure. Therefore, we need more mental health facilities to help them, and I want to help.

Beth completed 100 hours of placement and has secured an interview with Teesside University to pursue her dream career as a Paramedic. Good luck, Beth!

Bill

Health and Social Care student, Bill, 19, from Thornaby, has been selected for fast-track from Level 1 Health and Social Care to Level 3 on the basis he gets the grades he needs in GCSE Maths and English. And we have absolute faith that he can do it.

Bill has come a long way…literally. The former student of Okuapemman secondary school in Ghana, has impressed his tutors and fellow classmates with his can-do attitude and supportive nature. He says: “My dream is to become a healthcare professional such as a doctor or a nurse, and I am very excited for the Health and Social Care course to direct me towards my dream career.”

“I chose to study Health and Social Care at Stockton Riverside College because as an empathetic person, I am passionate about helping others, and I believe that I can help contribute to providing others with a better way of life. I would recommend the course because it is fantastic and helps put you on the path towards diverse opportunities and job roles that can help you become a qualified professional in the health and social care industry.”

Bill continues to say: “This college is the best in Teesside because it has a conducive environment that maintains effective teaching and learning practices. Its lecturers, facilities, security systems, in fact everything happens to be on point. Not to mention that this college has one of the best set of resources available to its students, including a well-resourced library, and qualified personnel, who work hand in hand to ensure that you are nurtured and guided towards your chosen career. This is why I trust the college will get me university-ready.”

Bill enjoys the flexibility that Stockton Riverside College has to offer. He says: “There are alternative courses you can turn to if you’ve had a change of mind.” But best of all for him, after showing commitment to his work and assignments, was being given the opportunity to fast-track to a higher level. He said: “The tutors are always working to get the best out of you and that is enough motivation.”

And if you were in doubt about the most important thing of all – the food… Bill would like to tell you: “Stockton Riverside College has excellent chefs and cooks at their cafeteria, always providing the best of dishes.”

Currently studying his Level 1 Health and Social Care, Bill is working hard to achieve his English and Maths qualifications that will see him through to the next level of his course. He says: “In the meantime, I am hoping to either volunteer, start a part-time job, or go on placement in any NHS setting to help me build upon my skills and qualities.”

According to tutor, Janet, Bill is an exceptional student and an absolute delight to teach. She says: “Honestly, he is a dream to teach. He’s inquisitive, polite, hardworking, respectful, keen to learn, and is like a sponge, soaking up information. He is so supportive of others as well, and nothing is too much trouble for him.”

We would like to wish Bill the best of luck for the future, and we’d just like to say that we’re very, very proud of him. Well done, Bill! Keep up the amazing work.
