Electrical students put their new skills to the test this week with an inter-college competition.

Bright sparks from Stockton Riverside College, New College Durham, East Durham College and Gateshead College, went head-to-head in a full-day electrical installation challenge.

Hosting the event here at the college, Course Leader for Electro Technical Studies Gary Mickle said: “It is a great opportunity for the students to meet other learners, share experiences and practices and challenge them by pushing them outside of their comfort zones.”

Supplied with a brief and specification drawing just days before, the level 2 full-time students had to install an electrical circuit.

Gary said: “In this case it was sockets and lighting based on a commercial installation.”

The North East Inter-College Electrical Competition offers the chance to go on to register for WorldSkills UK competitions.

Judging on the day was carried out on a point-based system by tutors from all four colleges.

Joint winners were Afaq from Stockton Riverside College and Kieran from New College Durham.

Hosting competitions is just one part of the College’s exciting plans for its Electrical Installation department here at Stockton Riverside College. Work has also started on remodelling the workshop area with a new tool store and new tools already completed.

The College offers a variety of electrical programmes and commercial courses, including the new 18th edition regulations. For details visit: www.stockton.ac.uk/courses/electrical-installations/
