Getting the chance to put your skills to good use is all part and parcel of student life at Stockton Riverside College.

And what better way to get real practical experience than getting out into the community?

That’s what our creative teams have been doing as they joined runners taking part in the Muddy Roads Halloween 5k Night Trail.

But our team weren’t hitting the road, they were adding a touch of fright to the spook-tacular event.

Work experience co-ordinator Denise Newman-Gilpin said: “This was a great opportunity for our students to gain real experience.”

Makeup for Production Arts students transformed Level 3 Acting for Stage and Screen students into ghosts and ghouls who lurked along the Tees Barrage trail, while Film and TV students captured the atmosphere on film.

Denise said: “The main thing for us was to get out into the community, for students to get real work experience and to let the community know Stockton Riverside College do these things.”

Muddy Roads organiser Gary Grounds, who also teaches at the College, said: “This is the second year that the students have got involved in this event.

“It was fantastic both for those taking part and also for the students.”

Around 250 runners took part in the night trail, with people coming from as far away as Newcastle to Leeds.

Gary said: “The events promote health and fitness throughout the Tees Valley and numbers have increased per year, as more and more new runners join the event.

“There is a real sense of freedom and achievement of being able to run in the dark (especially in the woods), knowing you are in a safe environment and being with likeminded people. Everybody supports each other and often share a drink together after the races. So many people have made new friends or transformed their lifestyle due to this, which was really why the events were set up in the first place.”
