It’s proving pitch perfect at our SRC Sports Centre where the team are establishing exciting new links with Spennymoor Town FC.

The club’s first team has chosen the centre in Billingham as the ideal home for their winter training.

This week the players have been getting to grips with their new facility, where they were also joined by members of the board.

Spennymoor Town FC manager Jason Ainsley said: “As a facility it is superb. The pitch is second to none.”

As the club is based in County Durham, with players travelling in from the likes of Manchester, Sheffield and Ashington, the manager said location-wise the centre offers a slightly closer alternative for those travelling in. The team also trains in Meadowfield.

Being a Stockton lad himself, Jason is happy to have such a high quality pitch right here on his doorstep.

That said, he explained: “The facility has to be good and the lads come here and they want to train, they want to be out there. Even at my age, it makes me want to be out there again too.”

Currently in the National League North, Jason said: “We are a club that has three promotions in five years. We are a club very much on the up. We missed out on the playoffs last year, so we are hoping to go one better.

“We have had a good month with five wins out of six games and one draw. We have got a good group of players, a really fit bunch. We just have to make sure that we try and get to the Promised Land. That means we have to work hard and it makes it easier when the facilities are good.”

The SRC Sports Centre has a FIFA 1 standard FA registered, flood-lit Astro pitch.

Centre manager Dave Morgan said: “It is testament to the facility and the standard of the pitch that we have attracted Spennymoor Town.

“The links that we have made are fantastic for the centre and also the sports students at SRC Bede Sixth Form.

“For us to attract a club like that is massive. And the good thing is the team are enjoying training here, you can see it.”
