Young amateur boxers were given the chance to showcase their skills at Stockton Riverside College this week.

The College played host to an amateur contest bringing together clubs from across the region.

Turning the Margaret Armstrong Theatre into a boxing arena for the first time ever, the sporting event was organised by Stockton's Natural Progression Boxing Academy and approved by Boxing England.

The tournament formed part of the College's NECOP work, a programme of activity to increase the number of young people from the North-east progressing into higher education.

"The college has been working hard to make links with local sports clubs as this is a great way to reach young people in the community," said the College's Programme Area Leader for Higher Education, Karl Johnson.

Visiting Stockton's Natural Progression Boxing Academy earlier this year, he said the idea was to tap into the young people's enthusiasm to go on to deliver their aspirational message.

"The young people seemed to really engage, so we were keen to continue to build on those links," he said.

And what better way to encourage the young people to learn more about the College and the opportunities it offers than to pay a visit while getting the chance to do something that they love?

Nine amateur boxing clubs from across the region were represented at the event, along with one club all the way from Perth Australia!

The budding young boxers competed in Skills, Junior or Senior bouts, while compere for the evening and presenting trophies to the winners was professional boxer and British Super-Bantam Weight champion Thomas Patrick Ward.

Karl said: "It was an unbelievable event and there really was a buzz around the place. There were judges and officials on hand and it was all about skill as the event was marshalled to Olympic-style boxing standards."

Among the clubs taking part were: Natural Progression Boxing Academy, Lakeside Community Boxing Club, Bilton Hall Amateur Boxing Club, Howdon Boxing Academy, Birtley Boxing Club, Benwell Victoria Amateur Boxing Club, Wellington Amateur Boxing Club, North Star Amateur Boxing Club, Redcar Amateur Boxing Club and Team Nash.

Well done to all!
