There is no denying that training to be a teacher takes hard work and dedication. But Sophie will tell you it is well worth the effort.

She is on her way to her dream of becoming a newly qualified teacher after picking up qualifications at Stockton Riverside College.

She said: “The best bit is seeing the things I say to the children having an impact on their learning. You try different approaches to explain things and suddenly you see the light switch on and they understand.”

Completing her BA Hons in Education and Training top-up at the College this summer, Sophie has secured a sought-after school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) position in a local primary school.

The move marks the culmination of four years of hard work for Sophie who started her journey on an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences.

“That was hard work but it gives you the chance to go to university,” she said.

She moved on to study a Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning before topping up to the full BA Hons with one final year of study, all at the College.

She said: “When I first started I didn’t think I would ever be able to achieve a degree but I have been getting good grades. I actually feel like I’m quite clever.

“It has definitely been worth it. The tutors are so supportive and the benefit of being in a college means that the class sizes are smaller so you are able to ask questions.”
