From deciding on your prom style to looking festival fabulous, summer brings with it the chance to have some real fun with your hair.

And when it comes to picking up some hints and tips, who better to chat to than our hairdressing students at Stockton Riverside College?

Taking note of the latest up and coming hair trends is an essential part of their studies along with developing the technical skills to create all the hottest styles. What’s more our students’ focus is fresh and current.

Shaunna Wallinger and Naima Boukhemal, who are both studying Level 3 Hairdressing, have been turning their attention to prom style. Here’s their guide to creating the look that’s right for you.

Consider your whole outfit

When it comes to creating your prom look it is about more than your hair, dress or makeup.
“It is about creating the whole look and how everything connects together,” said Naima.

That means, choosing a hairstyle that compliments your dress. “If the dress is quite simple then hair should be quite classic. Consider the silhouette of your outfit.”

Take into account what makes you comfortable. If you have a dress with a low back you may prefer to have part of the hair down for coverage, alternately you might want to show off a highly detailed back with a pin-up.

Face shape and hair type

When it comes to choosing the right style for you, face shape and hair type should always be your starting point. While there is no reason why, with a bit of practice, you can’t have a go at creating your own look, choosing a salon offers the chance to have a consultation and really explore what works for you.

Naima said: “The first thing I look at is the shape of the face and the length and thickness of the hair.”

The good news is extensions can quickly transform your tresses.

Making the look your own

Take inspiration from the latest trends and styles but always make the look your own. “Bringing some pictures along of the type of looks you like is a great starting point,” said Naima. These can be great inspiration for the type of look you want to achieve.

Shaunna added: “You don’t want your style to be exactly the same as someone else. It is better to use that as a base and then make the look your own.”

Accessories

Finally accessories should always tie in with the whole outfit. Think about their colour, style and size. Shaunna said: “It very much depends on the dress and makeup. You want something that compliments the overall look.”

Take any hair accessories you want to wear to the consultation so that these can be incorporated into the finished look.

Your five minute guide to festival hair

Summer is fast approaching, so we asked hairdressing students Sarah Polasik and Linda Cox for their five-minute round-up of hair trends for the festival season.

Sarah: “When it comes to festival hair there’s a few things you have to think about, like what if it rains, there’s going to be dancing and lots of moving around.”

Linda: “You need something that is easy to maintain but you also want to stand out from the crowd.”

Sarah: “Add some glitter to your style and be bold, with festivals now it is go big or go home!”

The key trends for summer 2018, according to Linda and Sarah: “It’s a lot of braids, backcombing and curls.”

And your festival style icons?

“Think Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj and Rita Ora.”
