Hundreds of ESOL learners piled into The Eye to celebrate each other’s achievements over the last year with dozens of students winning awards for attendance and progression.

There were several students who celebrated 100% attendance with two students from Claire Griffiths’ class who achieved not only 100% attendance this year, but last year too.

The organisation of the ceremony is passed to a different class every year and this year it was the turn of the entry level 3 group who included an interactive Kahoot quiz where learners had to guess which teacher one of their peers was describing.

Once the fun of the quiz was over, teachers Nicola Crabb and Wendy Castleton were presented with a huge bouquet of flowers each to say thank you for their dedication and support over the last year.

It was then time for a surprise for the staff. With the help of Learning Facilitator, Jamie Morgan, the 16-18 group created a film that touched all in the room.

Set to This is Me from the Greatest Showman, the film showed staff what the ESOL provision here at Stockton Riverside College means to them.

Head of Department for Maths, English and ESOL, Rebecca Matthews said: “It’s one of the most humbling and heart-warming experiences to be part of an event, which recognises the hard work and efforts of those who as a community speak over 84 different languages, from different backgrounds, including accountants, nurses and engineers, all united for one purpose – to learn the English language.”
