Prince’s Trust students have been working together to help transform a community garden for the Catterick Army Welfare Service and its surrounding community.

And their efforts have been recognised by the Garrison Commander and the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

The young people, taking part in the Trust’s Richmond Team, built on the foundations of their Team predecessors, to create a space that is fun, appealing and safe for families in the area.

“Years ago the space was made as a habitat where children and their families could come and interact with nature,” said Richmond Team leader Chris Barnes. But, unfortunately over the years, he explained, this part of Hipswell Habitat had fallen into disrepair.

Keen to restore the gardens to their former glory, last year The Prince’s Trust Richmond Team stepped in to start the transformation.

The group, made up of unemployed young people aged 16 to 25, cleared the area, restored and replanted raised beds and generally brought life back to the area.

Chris said: “The first Team did an amazing job, but it was such a large project we felt that there was more that could be done.”

Returning to the project, the second batch of young people continued to build on the first Team’s efforts, repairing fencing, adding a dedicated play area and making the habitat more attractive for its young visitors.

“I feel very proud of the guys and all that both teams have achieved,” said Chris. “It’s great to see the area being used again by families.”

A project handover ceremony saw children and parents once again enjoying all the gardens have to offer.

And there to offer a special word of thanks to the young people was Catterick Garrison Commander Joe Jordan and the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Barry Dodd CBE.

Do you want to get involved? The Prince’s Trust Team programme, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, is a free 12-week personal development programme available to young, unemployed people, aged 16 to 25. By taking part in a series of tasks and challenges the aim is to build the skills you need to return to education, training or work.

We are recruiting now for our Team programmes starting in Stockton, Billingham, Redcar, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Richmond and Bishop Auckland.
