Highflying careers in construction are on the cards for these young apprentices who are quickly building the skills of their chosen trade.

The future quantity surveyor and buyer are living proof, if it were needed, of the amazing variety of careers and opportunities that exist in the industry.

“When thinking of jobs in construction often people think mainly of those in the manual trades,” said Stockton Riverside College’s Head of Construction and Professional Services Michael Duffey.

But at the College, he said, they are keen to spread the word that there are so many more options to consider. And, whatever your ambition, Stockton Riverside College can help you lay down the foundations for your future career.

For Rebecca, 18, working as an apprentice quantity surveyor with Interserve Construction Limited is proving the right move.

Splitting her working days between being in the office and on the building site means that every day is different.

“I will usually do two days a week in the office and two days on-site,” she said. Added to that, spending one day a week in college gives her a much better understanding of the wider industry.

Rebecca chose to move into an apprenticeship after completing her A levels and she is enjoying the challenge.

Working with a variety of different people, she said: “It is good to see the way that they work.” And she added: “Getting to see a whole building set up can be rewarding.”

Lydia is also enjoying the variety that a career in construction offers.

The 19-year-old is an apprentice buyer with Persimmon Homes - a job she hadn’t previously considered but she is now loving every minute.

“I originally wanted to go into quantity surveying but then this apprenticeship came up.”

“It is great, I love it,” she said. “At the moment the job involves ordering and buying all the equipment and materials needed on site and getting the prices.”

Keen to get started in the work environment, an apprenticeship proved the ideal choice for her.

“This way I get both the training and the experience,” she said, which all helps when it comes to ultimately securing a permanent position.
