This April, the Commonwealth Games were 11 unforgettable days of world-class sporting action that took place on Australia’s Gold Coast, where over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories competed.

Over 9,000 miles away, right on our doorstep here in Billingham, we caught up with some of our very own sporting talent for their thoughts on everything… you guessed it… sport! From running to refereeing, alongside their studies Kaitlyn, Callum, Damon, Laura and Max are each members of high performing sporting clubs in the region.

Kaitlyn, who studies the Level 3 Performance & Excellence Diploma in Sport tuned in to the games, catching the nail-biting netball final, where in the last second England defeated Australia 52-51 to claim the gold. As a forward for Whitley Bay hockey team, Kaitlyn knows the score when it comes to clinching the winning goal, describing England’s result as “amazing”.

Results in the classroom can also produce results on the pitch, with many skills helping with extra-curricular activities and vice-versa. Laura, who’s a national cross-country runner and studies Level 3 Sport & Exercise Science said: “The course helps to develop coaching skills and our fitness levels, so we do things like the bleep test and use the gym.”

Max, who plays for the Newcastle Falcons rugby team added: “There’s modules like nutrition coming up, which will be really useful for my performance on the pitch.”

In addition to their course, all five students are taking part in the Level 2 Sports Leadership Award, an extra qualification offered to students. Over the Easter holidays, they had the opportunity to take part in the ‘Schools out, Sport’s in’ programme at the SRC Sports Centre in Billingham, leading activities for primary schoolchildren.

Putting their skills to the test, Damon and Callum who both study the Level 3 Performance & Excellence Diploma in Sport helped coach the youngsters key skills. Alongside his studies, Damon is a sports coach for Teesside Junior Football Alliance, and Callum is a referee for Durham Football Association.

When discussing the programme, Laura said: “It was really good fun coaching the kids and great that the voluntary hours contribute to our award.”

Now that their sporting education is off the starting blocks, all of the students are hoping to extend their knowledge with a sports related degree at university.
