Foundation Skills students have been picking up valuable lessons in personal safety.

Visits to the College from the police and fire service offered learners a first-hand insight into the services that are helping to keep our communities safe.

“The students have been learning about what it means to be part of the community,” said Stockton Riverside College lecturer Leanne Nixon.

“They are gaining independence and developing their own skills, so it is important to also understand about keeping themselves safe.”

Offering tips on road safety and safety in the home was Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Andrew Bright.

While Police Constable Amanda Stokes from Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit also paid a visit to help explain the part the police plays in keeping our communities safe.

Leanne said: “It helps for our students to understand the role of the police and the emergency services and to understand that they are there to help us.

“It also fits in with units they are covering as part of the Employability course such as being part of the community and safe independent travel.”

Our Foundation Skills courses are created to help young people achieve their own individual goals and for many that can mean growing in independence and confidence.

Of the police and fire service visits, Leanne said: “The students were completely engaged. They have been sharing what they learnt with their peers and you can see them putting it into practice when we go out.”
