SRC Bede Sixth Form students attended progression day last week, selecting from a timetable of informative and inspirational talks delivered by universities, employers, the armed forces and the police. Now in its 20th year, it’s a key event in the calendar.

Careers Co-ordinator Alice Atkinson said: “It’s important for students to plan ahead and actively think about their future. Progression day gives them the opportunity to ask questions to the experts.”

Some of those experts included Durham, Sheffield Hallam, Newcastle, Northumbria, CCAD, Sunderland, Teesside and York universities. Talks throughout the day equipped students with the knowledge needed for further studies, with Scott Henderson from the University of Sunderland advising on the all-important art of budgeting their student loan, whilst Joe Robinson from Northumbria University gave examples of the do’s and don’ts of personal statements.

For those students interested in gaining workplace roles after college, Barclays, IMechE, Tees Valley Learning Providers Network, the Armed Forces and the Police were on hand to offer guidance.

Natasha Lackenby from Barclay’s chatted to our students about her experience of their higher apprenticeship programme. She spent three years working in branch roles to build up her knowledge alongside studying for a degree in Leadership and Management.

“It was interactive and challenging, I feel like I got the best of both worlds,” said Natasha. “One day I would write a leadership assignment for university and the next day put that model into action.”

Brian Hudson, Chair for the Teesside Institute of Mechanical Engineers discussed engineering careers, and said:

“Mechanical engineering can range from oil, gas, petrochemicals and manufacturing to Weetabix factories, brewing alcohol, building robots and ships.”

His greatest piece of advice was to: “Choose the company carefully. Don’t just think about the money, the training and experience they offer may be more valuable.”

The key take home message for students was that there are many options out there to choose from, so do your research now, gain work experience, and pursue what you’re most interested in.
