Logistics Academy students paid a visit to Teesport as they continue to develop a working knowledge of the industry.

Port visit highlights future careers

Handling more than 5,000 vessels each year and around 40 million tonnes of cargo, there’s few better places to witness the sheer enormity of the sector and the diversity of careers that exist within it.

Taking a tour of the port, with stop-offs at the Freightliner and Cleveland Potash terminals, the visit was the latest in a series of master classes, workshops and trips, that the students have embarked on as part of the Career Ready programme.

The aim of the academy, which is delivered by Stockton Riverside College in partnership with PD Ports, Career Ready, Think Logistics, SRC Bede Sixth Form and NETA Training, is to raise young people’s awareness of the industry and highlight its career opportunities.

Business and Logistics Academy student Wajid Hussain said: “The sector is expanding and with a demand for skilled workers the Academy has shown us the opportunities that are there, particularly in this area.”

Hoping to ultimately go on to work in fleet management, he added: “One of the best parts for me has been the trips. We have visited companies where you are given advice from people who are experts in their own companies and know what they are looking for and expect from students.”

With the students also having taken part in a four-week internship, SRC Bede student Emily Clark said: “It has been really good, I have gained a lot of confidence from it but also made good contacts as well.”

Admitting that she had a limited understanding of the logistics industry before taking part in the programme, she now hopes to eventually pursue a career in engineering with a logistics firm.
