Background | Science Foundation | Lectures | Funding Support
When Madeleine died on 10 February 1996 aged only 56, her parents established the Madeleine Mary Walker Science Foundation as a lasting memorial to her. The trustees donated a generous amount of money to the college which enabled a science laboratory to be built in the new college building at Teesdale and this was officially opened and named after Madeleine on 25 June 2003.
In 2004, the trustees agreed to make a number of annual awards to students, on condition that one must be from the science faculty and another from elsewhere within the college. Each is to be awarded to the student “who has shown the greatest improvement in the year, taking all things into account. This student will not necessarily be the top student in each of the groupings. We are looking at encouraging a high standard of effort being put into their work. Madeleine Walker always put great effort into whatever she did and thereby achieved great things.”
The awards consist of a cheque to the value of £500.
To complement the awards, the college decided to award up to ten local school pupils in any one year Highly Commended status and each of these students receives a certificate plus a voucher for £50.
One member of staff who has made an outstanding contribution to the college during the year will also receive a cheque for £500 to be paid to the college for the use of the particular department from whence the staff member came. The second part is a Waterstones voucher for £50 for the staff member themselves.
Mary Frankland, a trustee of the foundation and former deputy head of St Patrick’s School in Thornaby, is invited to participate in the judging of award nominations each year. Mary is also a cousin of Madeleine Mary Walker.
The trustees of the Foundation are happy that the lecture may focus on different themes year on year, such as females into science or specific industrial uses. The lecture will normally be held in the college theatre and will be targeted primarily at young school leavers, years 10 and 11 to help inform their career choices.
