NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing

Level 1 enables you to undertake specific tasks and work closely with stylists and technical staff.

Entry Requirements:
No specific qualifications required; entry onto the programme will be through an interview and skills assessment.

Length of course:
1 year, 12 ½ hours per week plus tutorial support.

You will learn to:
• Contribute to Health and Safety
• Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
• Shampoo and condition hair
• Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
• Assist with salon reception duties
• Blow dry hair

Assessment:
This is carried out throughout the course together with assignments and a portfolio of work is required.

Materials Required:
Hairdressing kit, uniform, stationeryand text book.

Key Skills:
Communication and Application of Number are a compulsory part of the programme in addition to the 12.5 hours per week.


NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing

Level 2 offers an intermediate course in all hairdressing skills for the potential hairdresser and is a 9 unit award.

Entry Requirements:
Completion of Level 1 Hairdressing and a grade D or above in Maths, English and IT.

Length of course:
1 year - 12 ½ hours per week plus tutorial support.

You will learn to:
• Advise and consult with clients
• Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
• Fulfil salon reception duties
• Give clients a positive impression of yourself and
your organisation
• Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health & safety
• Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
• Change hair colour using basic techniques
• Cut hair using basic techniques
• Style, dress and finish hair

Assessment:
This is carried out throughout the course together with assignments and a portfolio of work is required.

Materials Required:
Hairdressing kit, uniform, stationeryand text book.

Key Skills:
Communication and Application of Number are a compulsory part of the programme in addition to the 12.5 hours per week

NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing

This level 3 qualification recognises your current level of skills but moves you to a higher professional standard. The level 3 programme requires competence in a broad range of work activities which are performed in a variety of contexts.

Entry Requirements:
GCSE Grade D or above in Maths and English and completion of level 2 hairdressing.

Length of course:
1 year – 6.5 hours in college and 6 hours in a hairdressing placement salon.

Mandatory Units:
• Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
• Promote additional products or services to clients
• Provide hairdressing consultation services
• Create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques

Optional Units:
• Style and dress long hair
• Colour using a variety of techniques
• Contribution to and implementation of a promotional activity
• Provide colour correction services
• Contribute to the effectiveness of the salon

Materials Required:
Hairdressing kit, uniform, stationeryand text book.
