BTEC Introductory Diploma in Art & Design (Level 1)


You will be introduced to a range of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art and design including painting, drawing, sculpture and graphic design.

You will explore and learn about different art and design techniques and processes and create a portfolio of work which will allow you to progress to a higher level course.

There are visits to exhibitions and local galleries throughout the year which include the Baltic Art Gallery and Mima.

You will work in a creative and exciting, friendly environment and be given advice and guidance from a range of specialist tutors.

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements; however, you will be given the opportunity to show your art work at interview.

Length of Course: 1 year - 6 units

• Visual Language
• Explore materials, techniques and processes
• Final major project

Specialist Units
• Introduction to 2D
• Introduction to multimedia production

Assessment
Continuous assessment by your tutor on a regular basis throughout the year as well as regular progress reviews and tutorials.

Pathway to level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design





BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design (Level 2)


You will be introduced to a range of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art and design areas such as painting, drawing, graphic design, surface pattern (textiles), fashion design, sculpture and 3D design.

You will explore and learn about different art and design techniques and processes. You will be shown how your ideas can be expressed through art and design. Discover how other artists and designers work and how they have made a career in art and design.

Create a portfolio of work and gain a qualification to progress onto a higher level course.

You will be given advice and guidance from a range of specialist tutors.

There are several visits to exhibitions and local galleries throughout the year which include the Baltic Art Gallery (Gateshead), Biscuit Factory and Mima Gallery (Middlesbrough). A residential trip to London and various talks and workshops from artists and designers form part of this course.

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements; however, you will be given the opportunity to show your art work at interview.

• Art History
Emphasis on the design process and sketchbook is a fundamental requirement during the course.

Specialist Units
Working in sculpture, fashion, interior design,graphics, fine art, textiles etc.

Assessment
Continuous assessment by your tutors on a regular basis throughout the year and you will receive informal and formal assessment reviews as well as regular tutorials and progress reviews.

• BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design Fashion and Clothing level 3
• National Diploma in Art & Design Level 3
• BTEC National Diploma in Multi-Media





BTEC National Diploma in General Art & Design (Level 3)


You will be introduced to a range of 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art and design areas such as painting, drawing, graphic design, surface pattern (textiles), fashion design, sculpture and 3D design.

You will explore and learn about different art and design techniques and processes. You will be shown how your ideas can be expressed through art and design. Discover how other artists and designers work and how they have made a career in art and design.

Create a portfolio of work and gain a qualification to progress on to a higher level course. You will also have an opportunity to show and sell your work in a professional gallery during the course. You will be given advice and guidance from a range of specialist tutors.

There are several visits to exhibitions and local galleries throughout the year which include the Baltic Art Gallery (Gateshead), Biscuit Factory and Mima Gallery (Middlesbrough). A residential trip to London and various talks and workshops from artists and designers form part of this course.

This is a completely practical course on which you will learn by completing set projects within the first year of your studies. Within the second year you will have the opportunity to specialise more in a certain pathway.

Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs grade C or above or BTEC First Diploma in Art and Design at merit level plus a portfolio of art work.

Length of Course: 2 years

Core Units
In drawing, painting, the design process, art history, fashion, textiles, graphics, sculpture, printmaking and illustration.

Assessment
Continuous assessment plus work to be moderated externally. There are no exams.

University to study a degree or HND course or employment within the art industry in subjects/ professions such as:

• Lecturer/Teaching
• Printmaking
• Interior Design
