Drama and Theatre Studies

If you have a keen interest in all aspects of the world of drama (performance, theory and texts) and a commitment to hard work, this subject could be right for you. You will study a range of different plays and practitioners as well as creating your own pieces of devised and pre-scripted drama.

Course content

AS: Unit one is a written paper in two parts:

  1. response to live theatre seen during the first year.
  2. questions on the studied set text.

Unit two is the practical presentation of an extract from a published play.

A2: Unit three is a written paper on two set texts, one pre-twentieth century play and one modern/contemporary play. Unit four is the practical performance of a devised piece of drama based on a theatrical style of your choice. Research of this style will be presented as part of the final mark in the form of a portfolio.

Trips and workshops

Throughout the year, various trips and workshops are organised that are essential to the course. Students have worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, west-end theatre directors and actors and professional practitioners.

Entry requirements

GCSE Drama is strongly advised. GCSE English Literature and/or English Language are also an advantage.

Method of assessment

Examination (Units 1 & 3) and course work, including assessed performance & portfolio.

This course is suitable if you wish to study Theatre or English at university and is obviously appropriate for the budding actor. Previous students have gone onto acting schools in London, English Literature courses and teaching courses.
