ICT (Information and Communications Computing Technology)


Everyone thinks they know about ICT because they use it every day to do tasks like producing word-processed essays. However, these practical skills are just the start! One main focus is how businesses use ICT to maximise their productivity. If you enjoy solving problems and like to try out new ideas, then read on.


Course content

AS: An introduction to ICT that looks at how data is collected and turned into information, then stored and shared; used or misused and kept secure. We study how ICT is used in applications. The practical work covers both using spreadsheets to model situations, and using different types of software to present information.

A2: Extends the topics covered in the AS course by emphasising the implications for organisations that use ICT. We study the management of information and networks. The project involves designing and implementing a database application for an external user.


Entry requirements

The course does not assume any previous ICT knowledge, but GCSE ICT is helpful.


Method of assessment

AS: One written exam including questions on your spreadsheet work, and three practical tasks involving different ways of presenting information. A2: One written exam and one practical project.


Progression

This course provides you with a solid foundation if you wish to go on to study Business Computing; Infomatics and other ICT degrees at university. It is also useful when applying for work in IT.
