Further Mathematics
If you are passionate about mathematics and already think you may want to study mathematics; physics or engineering at university, you may want to consider taking an AS in further mathematics. This is taken alongside AS mathematics. Students with a natural aptitude for mathematics usually enjoy the stimulating and exciting opportunity to study the subject with other like minded students.
Course content
AS: Further Pure 1 unit has some overlap with the core units in mathematics, extending them further. It also covers complex numbers, matrices and rational functions. Applied units are the same as mathematics.
A2: Further pure units include vectors, matrices, linear transformation, differential equations, polar coordinates, limits and extension of previous topics from AS. Another applied unit is also taken.
Entry requirements
A grade A or A* in GCSE maths is required. Some students opt into AS Further Mathematics after successfully completing AS Mathematics.
Method of assessment
All modules are assessed by a written exam.
Progression
Further Mathematics is looked on favourably by the top universities. Students who choose to study Further Mathematics go on to diverse careers and higher education courses. Degree courses include natural sciences, medicine, mathematics, engineering, business and biological sciences.
