Computing
Whether you spend hours using and talking about computers, or whether you just think they're the way forward for business and communications, if you're interested and would like to know more about them, this could be for you. Computing involves an introduction to program writing and the skills needed to break a task down into logical steps. It requires a flexible approach and a willingness to try out new ideas and find solutions to problems.
Course content
AS: You will study computer hardware, how data is stored, networks and how using computers affects society. You will also study programming and the techniques used to write large programs.
A2: The topics in AS Computing are extended and database and operating systems are added. The range of programming languages studied is wider. The practical work focuses on writing a program for a specific user.
Entry requirements
The course does not assume any previous knowledge but GCSE Maths, English & ICT grade C is helpful.
Method of assessment
AS: Two written exams.
A2: One written exam and a project.
Progression
This course provides you with a solid foundation if you wish to go on to study computing or a related degree at university. You might consider becoming a hardware designer / engineer, systems analyst, programmer or teacher.
