Critical Thinking
Introduction
Critical Thinking is a unique course. It is entirely based on developing and practising skills to do with understanding and presenting arguments. (Critical thinkers make a distinction between quarrels and arguments, which are constructed from reasons and which lead to conclusions). You will be tested on your skills and understanding – not on your ability to revise and remember a lot of facts and details. It may sound easy but it’s not. You have to think hard about what you read, say and write. Don’t imagine that it’s about being “critical”. It isn’t. In fact it’s about being constructive, and making out a good logical case. It will sharpen up your intellectual powers and give you confidence in the logic of your own opinions. You’ll have more to say and contribute.
Course Content
Critical Thinking can be combined with any subject, from Maths, to English Literature, to Psychology. On the course you will be taught to develop thinking skills, which are central to your ability to arrive at judgements based on reason. These skills are really important for your success in other AS or A Level studies, so the payback will not only be in the achievement of AS Critical Thinking but also in better grades in other subjects. The course covers the following: identifying reasons and conclusions, deciding the credibility of sources, presenting and evaluating arguments.
