Drama and Theatre Studies
Introduction
If you have a keen interest in all aspects of the world of drama (performance, theory and texts) and a commitment to hard work, this subject could be right for you.
You don't need to have studied GCSE Drama, but you do need to be able to produce well-organised essays and research tasks.
You will study a range of different plays and will look at the ideas of dramatists and directors and develop your own informed responses to their ideas and techniques.
You will be involved in practical drama and the development and application of these ideas. If you have an interest in the practical aspects of drama, such as directing, design, costume and lighting, there will be opportunities to develop your skills and ideas in these areas.
Course Content
AS: Unit one is a written paper in two parts:
Unit two is the practical presentation of an extract from a published play.
Rehearsal and performance work will be linked to the study of an influential director, designer or other practitioner, or the study of a theatre company. This will influence the final practical performance and the written portfolio. Theatre trips, educational workshops and sessions will be organised during the course.
A2: Unit three is a written paper on two set texts, one pre-twentieth century play and one modern/contemporary play.
Unit four is the practical performance of a devised piece of drama based on a theatrical style of your choice. Research of this style will be presented as part of the final mark in the form of a portfolio.
