Dance


Dance is hugely popular for both male and female students who want to develop their own performance to a high level and to develop skills in choreography as well as learning about dance as an art form and a means to a healthy lifestyle.


Course content

AS: In the first year you will develop your performance and your choreography in pairs or triads. The theory will concentrate on health and safety, techniques and critical skills with which to assess your own and others' performance and professional dance.

A2: The focus of the second year, choreography and performance, moves towards group dance. The theory concentrates on a specific area such as modern dance, ballet, dance in American musicals and you will study a specific practitioner.


Entry requirements

GCSE dance or an externally accredited dance qualification at an appropriate level may be acceptable as an alternative to GCSE dance.


Method of assessment

AS: 1 written exam - understanding dance 40% (20% of A Level) and 1 practical choreography and performance practical 60% (30% of A Level)

A2: 1 written exam - dance appreciation (25% of A Level) and 1 group choreography and solo performance practical (25% of A Level)


Progression

As well as careers in dance or courses in Higher Education, dance can support applications across a wide range of creative courses and careers.
