BTEC National Diploma in Media Production (Computer Games Development) (Level 3)


Introduction

Are you interested in becoming part of one of the most exciting and fastest growing sectors of the creative media industry? Set to be bigger than Hollywood, the gaming industry has seen huge growth over the last few years with computer game sales at an all time high. With incredible advances in technology and creative possibilities, the games industry offers a wide range of interesting career opportunities. This creative course aims to develop your skills in character design, conceptual art and visual design aspects of computer games. You will learn about how computer games are designed, developed and produced through both practical and theoretical study.

It is equivalent to 3 A Levels which means when you have finished the course you can choose whether to go into higher education or employment.


Course Content

Candidates must complete the 5 core units, the 2 mandatory specialist units, and 11 other specialist units.

Core Units: Research Techniques for the Media Industries; Pre-Production Techniques for the Media Industries; Production Management Project; Working to a Brief in the Media Industries; Critical Approaches to Media Products; Specialist Units (Compulsory); Understanding the Computer Game Industry; Computer Game Platforms and Technologies.

Specialist Units: You will study 11 specialist units according to your chosen pathway including some of the following: Flash for Computer Games; Computer Game Design; Sound for Computer Games; Computer Game Story Development; Digital Graphics; 2D Animation Production; 3D Modelling; 3D Animation; 3D Environments; Drawing Concept Art; Stop Motion Animation.


Assessment

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.


Subject Entry Guidelines

BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject, or an Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject, or at least four GCSE's at grades A*-C, or appropriate work experience


Career Opportunities

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by universities and employers. Students have gone on to study for Degrees including: Computer Games Design; Concept Art for Computer Games; 2D & 3D Animation; Computer Graphics; Creative Digital Media
