Physical Education


This course enables you to build on your previous experience from KS4 and GCSE to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the factors that affect sporting performance. You will also experience and develop skills in a variety of roles such as performer, official and leader/coach in at least one physical activity.


Course content

AS: You will learn about the anatomical, physical and psychological influences on performance. You will study the social, historical and cultural background to sport and physical activity, and you will be assessed on your active participation in sport which could be individual, a team sport or outdoor pursuit.

A2: This course builds on AS by re-visiting the main topic areas, looking at new aspects of each and exploring them in greater depth. There is an emphasis on optimising performance.


Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSE at grade C (or equivalent). Preferably at least a C in GCSE PE and Science. Active participation in sport.


Method of assessment

There are external examinations and practical assessment for both AS and A2 courses.


Progression

Acceptable to all universities, you might consider this course if you want to pursue a career in professional sport, teaching, physiotherapy, sports coaching, or leisure management.

AS: 1 year – A Level: 2 years
