Mathematics and Further Mathematics
Introduction
If you enjoy the problem solving and algebra involved in your GCSE Mathematics course then studying this subject at AS level or higher could be a realistic option for you. You may also choose Mathematics to support other subjects, to move on to a chosen career or a higher education course. For AS you will study two core maths modules and one applied maths module. For A2, you will study a further two core modules and another applied maths module. It is possible to study more than six modules in Mathematics allowing for up to 2 A Levels.
Course Content
AS: Core maths modules cover algebra, coordinate geometry, calculus, sequences, series, trigonometry and functions.
A2: Modules continue with these topics and also cover numerical methods and vectors.
Applied Maths modules are mechanics, statistics and decision maths. Mechanics is basically theoretical physics involving the study of force, mass, motion, energy and momentum. Using mathematical models to describe and predict real life situations is at the heart of mechanics. It is often chosen by students also taking physics. Statistics covers numerical measures, probability, the binomial distribution, the normal distribution, estimation, correlation and regression. Decision Maths is maths for managers. It covers algorithms, graphs, networks and various network problems. It also includes linear programming and mathematical modelling.
Assessment
All modules are assessed by a written exam.
Subject Entry Guidelines
Grade B or above in GCSE Maths is desirable with an enthusiasm for mathematics, a competence with algebra and the perseverance and determination to succeed.
Career Opportunities
Mathematics is an impressive qualification for an employer. Students who choose to study Mathematics go on to diverse careers and higher education courses. Degree courses include natural sciences, medicine, mathematics, engineering, business and biological sciences.
