Geology
Introduction
Geology is the science of the earth's origin, structure, composition and history. You will study the formation and identification of minerals, rocks and fossils; events past and present; the processes that have created the present pattern of continents and oceans and aspects of engineering and environmental geology. Fieldwork is an essential part of the course and you will have the opportunity to visit the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire coastline and the French Alps.
Course Content
AS: You will study four themes: the rock cycle, global tectonics, geological structures and environmental geology.
A2: You will study six themes:
Assessment
AS - two written exams and one practical exam.
A2 - three written exams and at least one item of coursework.
Subject Entry Guidelines
No experience of geology is necessary, although GCSE grade C in Science is preferred.
Career Opportunities
Students with degrees in geological science can follow careers in civil engineering, mining, oil exploration, environment assessment, surveying and teaching. Geology graduates possess a wide range of communication, IT and numerical skills and are highly valued by employers in many other occupations.
