Introduction
Biology is a very broad subject and at the forefront of twenty-first century science as biologists continue to unlock the secrets of life at an astounding pace. If you choose to study biology, you will gain a solid foundation in diverse fields such as biochemistry, ecology and anatomy. You will be immersed in a world of cutting-edge developments in genetics, molecular biology, physiology and biodiversity. You will gain the knowledge and skills to make a difference in tomorrow's world. Although biology is one of the most challenging A-levels, our students are overwhelmingly positive about their experience of this subject. Course Content
AS: Biological molecules; enzymes; cell ultrastructure; mitosis; gas exchange; plant biology; heart and circulation; biodiversity; classification; evolution; adaptations to the environment.
A2: Ecosystems; population dynamics; nutrient recycling; conservation; environment and sustainability; protein synthesis; genetic code; gene technology; cellular respiration; photosynthesis.

AS - two Unit exams and one practical skills unit

Subject Entry Guidelines
AS Biology has been written as the progression route for students who have taken GCSE Science plus GCSE Additional Science or GCSE Science plus GCSE Biology. Grade CC or above in one of these combinations is required to take AS Biology. Please contact us if you have any other Science qualifications. A minimum of grade C in both Maths and English is strongly recommended.
Career Opportunities
Biology can lead to careers in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, pharmacy, forestry, marine biology, veterinary science, industry and teaching - to name but a few. You develop a huge range of skills by studying biology - numeric, report writing, presentation, practical competence and an ability to analyse and investigate. These skills are transferable to a wide range of careers.
