Geology
Geology is the science of the Earth's origin, structure, composition and history.
Course content
AS: You will study four themes: the rock cycle, global tectonics, geological structures and environmental geology.
A2: You will study six themes:
Fieldwork is an essential part of the course and you will have the opportunity to visit the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire coastline and the French Alps.
Entry requirements
No experience of geology is necessary, although GCSE grade C in Maths and Science is essential.
Method of assessment
AS: Two written exams and one practical exam.
A2: Two written exams and at least one item of course work.
Progression
Students with degrees in geological science can follow careers in civil engineering, mining, oil exploration, environment assessment, surveying and teaching.
Geology graduates possess a wide range of communication, IT and numerical skills and are highly valued by employers in many other occupations.
