Theology, Philosophy & Ethics (TPE)
Introduction
The study of TPE at this level considers some of the major ethical issues in our world today, alongside traditional philosophical and religious approaches to these issues and other questions of huge importance to everyone. What is right, what is wrong and how do we know? What do words like 'good' and 'bad' really mean? Is there God? What is God like? Do you have a soul? Why is there evil? How much freedom do we really have? Is there 'another world' or is what we can see all there is?
If you enjoy thinking, can argue your point of view, but also see and respect the views of others, TPE will present an interesting, enjoyable (and at times a mind-blowing!) challenge.
Course Content
AS: Following an introduction to basic ethical theories and philosophical thought, you will explore the philosophy of religion and religious ethics. These address such topics as how we make moral decisions and the consequences of ethical decision making in the practical and controversial fields of medicine such as abortion, euthanasia and fertility treatment. We also consider the basis for belief in God, the different approaches to this question and the challenges and problems surrounding it today.
A2: This builds on the knowledge acquired at AS, looking at the ethical questions surrounding conscience, determinism and the ethics of sex and relationships, the environment and the world of business. On the philosophical/theological side we consider the issues of death and afterlife, religious experience, miracles and myth and the questions surrounding religious and moral language.
Assessment
AS is assessed by two module exams in year 1, one of which may be taken in January, the other in June. A2 is assessed by two module exams in the June of year 2.
Subject Entry Guidelines
GCSE English grade C or above is preferred. GCSE Religious Studies is helpful but not essential.
Career Opportunities
TPE trains you to think and is good preparation for any degree in the humanities or, in view of its ethical content, medicine, law or the sciences. It also, naturally, provides a basis for religious studies, theology or philosophy at higher education level.
