English Literature
Introduction
If you have an appetite for reading, writing and discussion this could be for you. You will get to know some works of literature very well including novels, poetry and plays
Course Content
AS: You will begin working with set texts straightaway. You will study the genre of tragedy, and make critical analyses of two drama texts, one Shakespeare and the other post-1900, and produce two pieces of coursework. You will also study two novels (one post-1990) and two poetry texts (both pre-1990), focusing on aspects of narrative in preparation for the exam.
A2: You will study a minimum of a further 3 texts all from the genre of gothic literature, building on the critical skills developed in AS in preparation for the exam. You will then have some independence in choosing a further two texts to be studied in a comparative way and these can then be used as the basis for a piece of coursework. Alongside this you will study some critical approaches to analysing texts. In addition to studying set texts you will be given the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and understanding by reading other texts which interest you. These texts may then be used for your coursework assignments.
Assessment
40% coursework / 60% examination in both AS and A2.
