English Language
We can often take our language skills for granted but in this course, you will be analysing the English Language to discover how it works and what effects it can produce.
Course content
AS: You will be introduced to the analytical study of language using a wide variety of texts, both written and spoken, and will use a systematic approach using specific linguistic areas. For your course work, you will write original pieces with commentaries explaining your techniques.
A2: You will study the development of the English Language over time, with a focus on 1700 to the present, examining how and why it changes. You will also analyse how children from birth to eleven, acquire language by examining their speech, reading and writing. Your course work will take the form of a formal investigation into a chosen area and a more creative text.
Entry requirements
GCSE English grade C or above.
Method of assessment
AS: 2 hour exam and course work (2 original texts and 2 commentaries)
A2: 2½ hour exam and course work (investigation and media text)
Progression
This course is suitable for students wishing to study English or Linguistics at university as well as related courses such as Modern Foreign Languages and Politics leading to careers such as journalism, teaching, law and management.

AS: 1 year – A Level: 2 years
GCSE English is available for a few students who may have a good grade D in Year 11
