Business Studies
Introduction
Business organisations play an important role in your life. Everyday we all interact with businesses, use their products and make decisions as consumers of their services. The business studies course looks at what makes a successful business and the elements it needs to develop and grow. It puts you in the positions of manager, employee and consumer and focuses on how decisions are made. You will use real examples and investigate real businesses in order to understand the key factors for success.
Course Content
AS: The first year course involves looking at aims and objectives of business and the factors that influence decisions. You will begin to understand how businesses behave in the face of competition, changing lifestyles and environmental issues. You will be able to identify the different ways businesses manage their employees and resources in order to be more successful. You'll look at elements of marketing and develop a knowledge of how decisions are made.
A2: In the second year you will be expected to take on a more critical role in terms of how you evaluate businesses. Using knowledge gained on the AS course you will be required to assess the performance of real businesses and identify how they can improve their performance. You will be looking at different business strategies and making recommendations about the future plans a business could adopt.
Assessment
2 written exams for both AS and A Level. Exams are based on seen and unseen case studies.
Work Experience
None, but there are opportunities to develop links with local businesses.
Subject Entry Guidelines
GCSE Business is not required. You need to be confident in Maths and English.

Whatever you do, voluntary or paid, public or private sector, profit or non-profit making, you will be working in a type of business organisation! An understanding of business principles is useful in any chosen career.
